Sustainable Pearl Education offers engaging learning experiences that connect pearl culture, marine science, creativity and ESG principles. Through talks, experiments, hands-on workshops and coastal experiences, participants discover how pearls are formed, how pearl cultivation connects with the marine environment, and how science, technology and responsible choices can support a more sustainable future.
Our programmes are suitable for schools, families, visitors, community groups and corporate teams. Activities can be adapted to different age groups, learning goals and group sizes.
You have the options Basic Pearl Sciences, Shell Art Workshop, and Pearl Accessory Workshop. Depends on your time availability, you can choose one or all of them. All options would start off with the Pearl Seminar and the Origin of Pearls - the foundational program, followed by a Pearl Finding Demo or Experience.
We serve groups with 40 or more people. For groups with less than 40 people, please visit The Pearl Farm.
FOUNDATIONAL PROGRAM
Pearl Seminar
Learning Objective
To build an overview of understanding about the Hong Kong pearl history and culture, basics of pearl economics, marine restoration, and sustainable development.

Origin of the Pearl
Learning Objective
To understand the water filtration process of a bivalve, the formation of natural pearls, and the pearl cultivation process.

Pearl Finding Demo / Experience
Learning Objective
To understand the water filtration process of a bivalve, the formation of natural pearls, and the pearl cultivation.
What Happens
The instructor will demonstrate how to find a pearl. Depending on the package, the pearl will be given to the participant or the group leader for further usage. This will stem off to the Basic Pearl Sciences for the Pearl Finding Demo or the Pearl Accessory Workshop or the Pearl Finding Experience.
Note: This is also the moment where participants will take a lot of photos, showing off the pearls that they have found.

EXTENDED PROGRAM
Basic Pearl Sciences
Learning Objective
To gain an in-depth understanding of the anatomy of the pearl oyster, how it processes the micro-organisms, and where it grows a pearl.
What Happens
About 4 to 7 participants may share a pearl oyster for this activity.
After the group observes the Pearl Finding Demo. The group will draw and label the body parts of the internal organ. The resulting pearl will be left to the participants' discretion. The meat will be used to feed the fish. The shells can be used later.

Shell Art Workshop
Learning Objective
To experience the process of upcycling by creating their own shell art.
What Happens
The participants use the shells to create a simple art piece to take home.

Pearl Accessory Workshop
Learning Objective
To understand and experience the full process by transforming a pearl into a unique pearl accessory.
What Happens
After each participant gets a pearl from the Pearl Finding Experience, they will take their own pearl to the instructor, drill a through-hole, choose the parts, and create the accessory.

How to Plan
Our Pearl Accessory Workshop at the Sea is a 3-hour workshop that can cater up to 120 people. The participants will start off with the Foundational Program and then Pearl Accessory Workshop.
However, if under budget constraint, the Basic Pearl Sciences and Shell Art Workshop can be enjoyed together or separately.
Remember, the learning experience or event does not end here. The accessories and other works that the participants have created may greater purposes.
